Claire - Facility HR Manager
What is your role and responsibilities at MAT Foundry Group?
I am the HR Manager at Eurac Poole Ltd.
What inspired you to pursue a career in engineering?
If I’m honest I didn’t initially set out for a career in engineering. When I started in Human Resources (many years ago) it was within a manufacturing business and I enjoyed seeing a production facility and contributing towards its development and growth through people skills, development and recruitment. As the years have gone by and I have changed jobs I have maintained that interest in manufacturing and industry and feel it offers more than HR in the retail or service sector.
Were many of your friends growing up interested in seeking a similar career to yourself?
When I was at school women in engineering wasn’t really the “done” thing. As the years have passed by through my role in HR I have seen this now become more popular and company's realise that there are further talents within the marketplace they can look to.
Do you think there are enough female role models in engineering?
No – it is still seen as the unusual rather than the norm.
>How do you think schools, colleges and universities can promote engineering to make it more attractive to women?
Make it more available – schools are moving away from stereotypical careers for boys and girls but this must continue and at a greater pace. Science and technology needs to be encouraged and made more attractive for all.
What do you think the reasons are for the low employment levels for women in engineering roles?
Stereotypical views and perceptions which are slowly changing but take time. It’s the mindset of those recruiting that often needs changing.
> What attributes do you feel are required to make a career in engineering?
Passion, commitment, interest in technology, innovative, driven individuals willing to challenge the status quo and therefore be open to and looking for change.
> What would you say to any young women thinking of making a career in engineering?
Go for it – follow your dreams there is no reason why you can’t be successful in your chosen career.
What are your career goals moving forward?
To continue to deliver a professional HR service to the company, find workable solutions to the challenges we face to support the employees, managers and directors.
What is the best thing about working at MAT Foundry Group?
They say the people make a company and I’d certainly agree with that. Working for a progressive, developing company that supports and encourages its employees.
